Retired teachers needed
to volunteer in Expert Literacy Volunteers Project
The Columbus Education Association-Retired teachers and The Ohio State University’s Office of Outreach and Engagement recently announced the go-ahead of the Expert Literacy Volunteers in Schools (ELVIS) Project.
ELVIS tutors are retired teachers who want the opportunity to work with children but without the obligations of full-time work. ELVIS tutors:
▪ Attend ten 2 hour training sessions in the Fall at OSU…
▪ Then volunteer in 1st and 2nd grade classrooms in Winter and Spring, working with children who are average or above while freeing the classroom teacher to work with struggling students.
The ELVIS Project respects your time and availability and supports your desire to make a difference in the lives of children.

Dear
It was great talking to you on the phone. Below are answers to three of the most frequently asked questions about the Expert Literacy Volunteers in Schools (ELVIS) Project:
Who are we? We are a partnership between the Columbus Education Association-Retired Teachers and The Ohio State University who seek to identify, train, place, and support retired teachers in schools as literacy volunteers. We respect the amount of time you are prepared to give as a volunteer while supporting you in making a difference in the lives of young children.
What do I do? You (a) attend ten 2 hour training sessions in the Fall at OSU, (b) then volunteer in 1st and 2nd grade classrooms in the Winter and Spring, (c) while working with children who are average or above freeing the classroom teacher to work with struggling students.
When do we meet? In the Fall, our meetings will always be on Tuesdays between 1 and 3 PM. The Fall meeting dates are: Oct.3; Oct.10; Oct.17; Oct.31; Nov.7; Nov.28; Dec.5; Dec.12; Jan.9; and Jan.23. In the Winter and Spring we ask that you be available 2 days a week between 10:30 AM and 12:30 PM beginning February 5th. Of course there may be some days you cannot attend and we will work around those. On Oct.3 there is a wine and cheese party immediately following the first session beginning at 3 PM.
Where do I go? We will meet at 807 Kinnear Rd., Columbus near the West Campus of OSU and at a nearby school.
If you have additional questions, call or email me. If I do not hear from you I look forward to seeing you at our first meeting at 1PM, October 3rd at 807 Kinnear Road in Columbus. Ample free parking is available. Directions are enclosed.
Sincerely,
Adrian Rodgers
