There is a bogus organization conducting a phishing scam of educators -
many of them our members - that you and your members should know about.
They call themselves the National Teachers Education Association and are
using NEA's address as their contact information. The message identifies
itself as coming from the Executive Secretary - Susan Landen.
The message tells recipients that they have been nominated for induction
into the National Teachers Hall of Fame - and directs them through a
series of internet prompts to find out more - and asking the recipient
for more information.
There is a National Teachers Hall of Fame. It's in Kansas, and NEA has
been a long-time supporter. But this is NOT a Hall of Fame initiative.
NEA's ITS Department has reported the information to the Anti-Phishing
Working Group (APWG), http://www.antiphishing.org. (The APWG is the
global pan-industrial and law enforcement association focused on
eliminating the fraud and identity theft that result from phishing,
pharming and email spoofing of all types.)
ITS suggests that members who receive a similar e-mail:
* Forward phishing emails to spam@uce.gov
* Report phishing email to reportphishing@antiphishing.org.
* File a complaint at ftc.gov
NEA ITS also suggests that everyone visit the site -
http://www.onguardonline.gov/topics/phishing.aspx - to get more
information on Phishing Scams and to find out how you can protect
yourself.

Center for Cultural Interchange
Posted 5/13/2009 Columbus Area residents have an opportunity to participate in cultural exchange. Both American students and potential host families are provided this chance through the Center for Cultural Interchange (CCI), a nonprofit organization.
Center for Cultural Interchange is currently looking for families who are interested in hosting a high school age exchange student from Brazil, Spain, Germany, France and other European countries during the upcoming school year.
The students arrive in their host country shortly before school begins and return at the end of the school year. Each CCI student is fully insured for accident, health and liability, brings his or her own spending money and expects to assume a share of household responsibilities. Both international and American students who are selected for CCI’s programs are flexible, open-minded, mature, academically-motivated and willing to adapt to another family’s life-style. Semester and academic year students come with sufficient language proficiency to maintain at least a C average in the local high school.
Kelly Brown is the local CCI Area Representative who has worked with various youth programs for the last five years. Brown believes that cultural diversity and understanding is essential to thriving in our emerging global economy and world.
CCI is dedicated to promoting cultural understanding, academic development and world peace. CCI is designated by the United States Department of State as an exchange program sponsor. On the basis of materials submitted and reviewed, the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel grants full listing to CCI in the Advisory List. The CSIET mark certifies that this organization complies with the standards set forth in the CSIET's standards for international educational travel programs.
CCI welcomes staff, participants and host families from every race, nationality, creed and religion.

ARTISTIC RETIREES
Working with Jim Arter, the Director of the Greater Columbus
Arts Council, retired teacher Booker Brooks is attempting to build a list of
interested retired and current teachers from the metro area that would be eager
to find a venue that will allow them to display their art work. The mediums are
entirely open. Mr. Brooks medium is creating unique wood art on the wood
lathe. The idea is to give current teachers an opportunity to relieve stress
and retired teachers to uncover the talent that might have remained dormant
while concentrating on their students for many years.
We are trying to develop a core group of planners to do the initial legwork for
this endeavor. There are some venues that have already been approached and are
receptive to the core idea. Since most venues plan out as much as a year ahead
we must make decisions fairly soon. One new venue will want a proposal within a
month. Any interested teachers are encouraged to contact Mr. Brooks at
614-430-9221 or email to
bookerbrooks@yahoo.com.
